It is with great sadness that the Newman Family share the news of John Newman OAMs passing. He was 94 years old, and passed away peacefully on Sunday the 28th of July 2024 in Melbourne, of old age. His immediate family were by his side.
Over his incredible life, John – and his late wife Tikki – touched people from all over the world. They met performing in JC Williamson musicals before touring as a variety duo, playing to audiences all around the world. They eventually settled back in Melbourne and opened their iconic venue “Tikki & John’s”. Their three children – Paul, Marc and Haydie – were born and lived above the venue during this time.
John and Tikki were pioneers of Melbourne’s now world-renowned entertainment scene. Newman Entertainment – the family business, established in 1964 – continues to entertain thousands of people a week through its flagship product “Dracula’s”.
John’s life goal was simply to entertain. His passion for this never ceased. Always the showman, he could captivate a room with his stories and jokes. His zest for life was unparalleled.
In the past month, John travelled to the Gold Coast to see the current Dracula’s production. He was thrilled to see audiences laughing, clapping and singing in a venue he conceived. The flags that adorn the building are flying at half-mast this week.
“Slixie”, as he was known to friends and family, leaves behind a legacy of a lifetime of entertainment that will continue for many years to come.
The Newman Family will be hosting a small, private celebration of John’s life.
